Mayoral Committee Assesses Landfill Site Upgrade Project

Sep 1, 2023

The Executive Mayor of Lekwa Local Municipality, Cllr. Louis Thabethe led the Mayoral Committee to assess the landfill site upgrade project in Standerton today.

The project is implemented to ensure that waste management is performed in a manner that is not harmful to both the environment and human health.

Executive Mayor Thabethe said after receiving reports about the progress made in the project, they have decided to conduct an assessment visit to the project without the company of the management.

“Our visit to this project without the company of management is only coming from the court order that we must comply with Waste Act of 2008 but also from the fact that this is something that the municipality should have done long time ago to protect the health of Lekwa residents and their environment.

“It has been a nuisance to the neighbouring farmers and a health hazard to the entire community as papers, plastics and waste material would be blown by wind to spread all over,” he said.
Executive Mayor said he was happy with the progress made so far even though there are minor technical delays and the project is expected to be completed before the end of the years.

The project scope among other things including fencing of the landfill sit; compaction deposited waste; dust and odor management; construction of guard house, offices and ablution facilities; electrification; drilling and equipping of two boreholes; and installation of the high mast lights.

He said once the project is complete it will help the municipality to comply with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NMWA) 59 of 2008.
